Musical Artistry!

What is it?

Roy Sonne discusses and demonstrates

What is Musical Artistry?

Musical artistry is:

  • Communicating

  • Conveying moods

  • Portraying feelings

  • Creating beauty

  • Projecting to an audience

  • Finding the inner meaning of the music

  • Producing a tone that speaks to the heart

  • Using a palette of tone colors, like a painter

Musical Artistry begins with the printed page.

Musical Artistry means:

  • giving the music style.

  • giving the phrases shape

    and variety

  • Conveying moods

    and emotions

  • Using different colors

Musical Artistry is the meeting ground between technique and musical expression.

  • As violinists we develop our violinistic resources to express the music.

  • We practice scales and etudes to develop a whole vocabulary of bow strokes

    • Detache

    • Martele

    • Spiccato

    • Legato

Musical artistry means experimenting.

We experiment with:

  • Dynamics: How loud shall we play?

  • Tempo: How fast shall we play?

  • The length of the notes: Shorter or longer?

  • Fingerings

  • Slides

  • Bowings.

  • Tone color.

These are just a few of the things that Musical Artistry can mean.
